Sullivan’s Island is the epitome of a beach community lifestyle and has been since the 17th century. The Island is home to about 2,000 residents along the two and a half miles to Charleston Harbor. Standard Pipe Services was extended an invitation when problems of inflow and infiltration were discovered.
Project: Sewer Grouting Process
According to Trenchless Technology, after an assessment, Sullivan Island had an infiltration and inflow (i/I) problem that covered 90% of the mass area. The community was alarmed to discover so many structural defects and started weighing options for this immense undertaking. Sullivan Island worked with several experts and split phases into digestible goals utilizing several vendors, one of which was Standard Pipe Services (SPS). SPS committed six months to the sewer grouting process at Sullivan’s Island.
Our Approach
Experts noted that chemical grouting was a cost-effective solution with a solid, proven methodology. Standard Pipe Services provided grouting services through several thousand feet of pipe network. The results exceeded expectations in preventing inflow and infiltration. Trenchless Technology concluded:
Beyond Sullivan’s Island, “grout first” can be the most cost-effective I/I solution for other communities and sewer districts choosing to be proactive prior to requiring more costly structural repairs. In the name of sustainability, in support of trenchless technologies, and in defense of ratepayers everywhere, injection grouting deserves thoughtful consideration from municipal stakeholders and consulting engineers.
