A lateral is a pipe that carries water (waste or otherwise) from homes and businesses to and from the city grid. Lining lateral pipes in repair and maintenance cycles is central to restoring optimal flow. Lateral Lining can be performed utilizing steamed cured resins, or ambient cured resins based on the type of situation we are involved in. We typically will always recommend lateral relining all the way to the cleanout so that both the homeowner and the town can benefit.
Lateral Protrusion Cutting
A protrusion is “a dimensional anomaly within the pipeline that extends from the pipe’s internal diameter,” by Trenchlesspedia. In other words, protrusions can be any defect that sticks out and could snag on the liner, similar to that winter sweater you should have thrown away years ago. Standard Pipe Services resolves protrusions by cutting them with a Schwalm cutting tool. Then, the trimmings will be jetted and removed from the line section for safe disposal. If multiple laterals exist in the line section, SPS recommends grouting to reduce additional infiltration.
LETS Camera Televising
Lateral Evaluations Televising System (LETS) uses many of the same principles in the cleaning and televising phase. LETS’ popularity has spread across the industry in recent years, with the problems of aging infrastructure at the forefront. With many sanitary sewer mains being repaired, water is finding the next weakest link in the line section: the lateral connections and joints.
To diagnose problems, LETS is designed to perform a lateral inspection from the mainline pipe. It can televise approximately 120 feet in a 4 or 6-inch diameter lateral. However, the camera is limited in some respects because it is not on wheels. Instead, the television camera acts closer to a push camera in style by gliding across the bottom of the lateral.
The inspection allows the PACP operator to determine if there are: cracks, breaks, or infiltration issues in the pipe. Notes are added to the inspection reports and relayed to the engineer.
One common problem municipalities, cities, and towns face in Lateral Televising are the costs related to using the LETS camera equipment. When a home has a cleanout, the cost of televising with a push camera is roughly 1/2 that of a LETS televised lateral. The costs associated are due to the equipment costs and more in-depth performance. Standard Pipe Services’ goal is to provide the best solution for the repairs and help remove any issues we can for the owner.
Standard Pipe Services (SPS) implements trenchless technology for all pipe rehabilitations. Pipe rehabilitation is the repairing or replacement of the underground network of sewer and water pipelines. To quote or blog on trenchless technology:
Trenchless Technology incorporates several pipe rehabilitation methods with little to no digging and is eco-friendly. It is, as it sounds, ‘trenchless’. Trenchless technologies offer quick, cost-effective solutions for repairing or replacing pipes and manholes while featuring non-disruptive strategies.
By cost-effective, trenchless doesn’t save pennies – it is about HALF the cost of digging up lines under the pavement or surface. Before trenchless technology, you would have to replace more of your sidewalk, driveway, decorative pavers, or cobblestone. Trenchless is a considerable money saving. Most trenchless repairs take one day and a few workers. But this is not every case. Contact us today to discuss how we can help you. You may also find helpful answers in our Blog or FAQ.
