Infiltration refers to groundwater working its way into sewer pipes through holes, cracks, or other defects. Inflow refers to stormwater that finds its way into the sewers through storm drains, unsealed manhole covers, or other damaged structures. The two words are paired together frequently and are better known as I/I. Aging infrastructure that is not maintained causes inflow & infiltration issues leading to a sewer overflow. Storms increase groundwater levels which increases infiltration flows. One affects the other and teeters in balance; both need a functioning infrastructure. It is crucial to institute I/I programs to protect the environment and keep wastewater costs to a minimum.
